Overall Objectives We concentrate on three long-term objectives Our vision is manifested in three long-term objectives to improve the conditions of children. Our work shall contribute to: • Children being protected from discrimination, exploitation, violence and other abuse. • Children having their voice heard and exercising influence over their situation. • Children being ensured a safe and healthy upbringing and learning that provides self-esteem and relevant knowledge.
Save the Children Sweden will use indicators to evaluate developments in how these objectives are met in countries where we have a presence.
We focus on four strategic objectives regarding changes in society Achieving a sustainable change in children’s conditions as expressed in the three long-term objectives requires a number of preconditions in society. Our work shall contribute to the achievement of the following strategic objectives: • Decision-makers and authorities take into account the rights of the child in planning, policy making, allocation of resources and practical actions. • The media monitors and promotes the rights of the child. • Civil society, including children’s own organisations, monitors and promotes the rights of the child. • Families and individual children and adults in local communities, respect, protect and reinforce the rights of the child.
Who the key decision-makers and authorities are varies among different societies and cultures and therefore needs to be specified locally. Decision-makers may be politicians, religious leaders, military leaders or business leaders. Important authorities often include education/schools, justice/police, health and social authorities. At the international level, UN institutions, regional bodies and aid agencies are important entities.
Likewise, the key players in civil society also differ depending on community and issue. Supporting organisations, media and local communities to promote and monitor children’s rights contributes not only to improvements for children but also to a country’s general democratic development. Such development is a precondition for alleviating poverty and implementing a culture of human rights.
The four strategic objectives are interrelated. When pursuing an issue we make sure we target all four of them in order to achieve change. Save the Children Sweden will use indicators to evaluate development in society with regards to these objectives.
We have two strategic objectives for partnerships When we work abroad our efforts should also assist our partners in: • Developing their capacity and self-reliance as child rights advocates. • Participating actively in networking and sharing experiences with Save the Children Sweden and other organisations. Who the key partners are will depend on the society and issues and will be defined locally. Save the Children Sweden will use indicators to evaluate how partners develop with regards to these objectives.
